Simple Health Tips #7: Sleep

In life, there is so much that we have to do maintain a healthy lifestyle....exercise, correct diet, hygiene etc.

But there is a simple health tip that is so important and required so little from us but as we're caught in the busy and hectic lifestyle, we forgot the importance of it....SLEEP

BEAUTY SLEEP

I ain't sure how many of you are still awake at 12 or 1 in the morning but most of my friends are...and so am I, most of the time. Well, if you're like me, maybe it's time to make some adjustment to our lifestyle and here are some simple reason why you should get enough sleep.

Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles.

Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

Here are some other benefits of sleeping that you may not be aware of:

1) MEMORY POWER IMPROVE; CREATIVITY TRIGGERED

In the research today, scientists have found that sleep can help to improve your memory power. While we may not be aware of what happen as we doze off, our brains could be quite busy as we sleep.

Apparently, a process known as "consolidation" takes place as you sleep....it's where your brain practice and strengthen your memories and your daily activities. In other words, if you are learning something new, said a new language or programming etc, sleeping helps you to be better.

Studies have also shown that sleeping can help to trigger the creativity in you. When you have enough sleep, besides just doing the consolidation on the information that you received on a daily basis, apparently you brain also do the work of reorganize and restructuring. Researchers at Harvard University and Boston College found that people seem to strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep, which may help spur the creative process.

Ever wonder why sometimes you wake up from your sleep and have a new idea for your assignment or new project? That's what sleeping does!!

2) IMPROVE ATHLETES' PERFORMANCE

We all heard of the word "No pain, no gain" but if you're an athlete, you will know the importance of sleep in boosting your performance. A Stanford University study found that college football players who tried to sleep at least 10 hours a night for seven to eight weeks improved their average sprint time and had less daytime fatigue and more stamina. The same result is for the swimmers and tennis players.

Boost your performance physically

So, if you're preparing for a marathon or a competition, don't forget your sleep.

3) SHARPEN YOUR ATTENTION

Have you ever seen some kids who cannot really focus and concentrate?

ADHD

A 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics found that children ages seven and eight who got less than about eight hours of sleep a night were more likely to be hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive.

With better and sufficient sleep, these kids will show improvement in their level of concentration.

4) HEALTHY WEIGHT

A lot of us think about exercise and diet when we talk about sleep, but if you're looking for a healthy weight, you better make sure you take care of your sleep as well.

Working towards Healthy Weight...don't forget your sleep

Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat—56% of their weight loss—than those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass. (They shed similar amounts of total weight regardless of sleep.)

Dieters in the study also felt more hungry when they got less sleep. Apparently, sleep and the metabolic rate is controlled by the same sector of the brain. And when you feel sleepy, the hormones that go up in your blood are those same hormones that drive appetite.

I guess this answer the question of why we normally feel hungry if we stay up late for work/studies/entertainment.

5) LIVE A LONGER LIFE

I think with this reason alone, sleep should be important enough. We all know that too little or too much sleep will affect the lifespan although it's unclear whether it's the cause or effect.

Besides that, sleep affects quality life.

One thing for sure: If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear.

I hope that the awareness on the importance of sleep will be a motivation for us to aim for better and quality sleep.
