With expectations high for Jose Mourinho's Manchester United to win the first Premier League game, it is likely that the Special One will stick to the 4-3-3 system but who's expected to start?
Man Utd welcome West Ham Utd into Old Trafford on Sunday, with kick off time at 11pm Malaysia time.
After a lackluster performance against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, can the Red Devils bounce back to kick off the new campaign? What might the starting line up be against West Ham, who has former Red Devils striker, Chicharito in their line-up?
Below are the players that are likely to start, and some of the reasons why Mourinho will play them over the existing big squad.
Goalkeeper - David De Gea
Perhaps the most consistent player for Manchester United since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. De Gea will have to be at his best to stop former colleague, Chicharito.
Defenders
LB - Matteo Darmian
The Italian defender has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford back to his homeland, Juventus, but with Darmian insisted that he's happy at Old Trafford, it's likely to see him take the first place at LB given that Luke Shaw is still not back.
CB - Phil Jones
Injury has always been one of the problem for Phil Jones but Mourinho was fond of the style of his play. Not afraid of tackle and fairly solid on the ball. With United's new signing Lindelof struggling to assimilate himself into the team, I suspect Mourinho will pair Jones with Bailly instead, to ensure the Red Devils is off to a winning start.
RB - Antonio Valencia
Valencia has established himself as one of the top selection for Mourinho...while he may not be the most creative right winger, Valencia definitely has a lot of pace in him. With him at the right back, he could easily support the United attack but be on time to defend the ball for the Red Devils as well. Definitely a starter for Valencia. Can't see anyone displacing his position at the moment.
Midfielders
CM - Ander Herrera
Herrera, the fan favourite...and it's difficult to argue that...the passion that he shown and while he does not graduate from Old Trafford's academy, the sort of passion and love that he shown to United, has easily made him the player that all the fans loved.
He's also the player that Mourinho could trust, even for dirty works as well.
Definitely will get a role here despite his underperformance against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.
CM - Nemanja Matic
Matic has shown the quality he has against Real Madrid, and the former Chelsea player will definitely be given a starting role for most of the game this season given the trust that Mourinho has in him.
It will be great to see how he could gel along with Pogba and Herrera eventually.
Hopefully it's sooner than later.
CM - Paul Pogba
This is supposed to be the season where Pogba showed that he's among the best players in the world, but his performance against Real Madrid make that statement looks laughable.
I'm really hoping to see him live up to the expectations because really, United needs him to step up.
A definite starter, with the team built around him.
Forwards
LW - Anthony Martial
There is no doubt Martial is an excellent striker, good at his feet, dribbling and sharp as a striker but like what Mourinho said, he needs to be more consistent.
Mourinho has said that Martial is part of his plan, and I think he will take turn with Rashford on this role.
CF - Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku, the big signing will start, as long as his goal scoring record remains. So far, he has lived up to that.
RW - Henrikh Mkhitaryan
It's a turnaround for Mkhitaryan after starting in the wrong footing with Mourinho, but his attitude has since helped him to gain a starting role under Mourinho's plan.
