Malaysia: What abuse of power?
When the Court of Appeal strike out the suit by former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir and two others against prime minister Najib Razak over alleged abuse of power to obstruct investigation into 1MDB issue, on grounds that Najib was not a public officer, there was not any mention of the abuse of power at all...which makes one wonder.
But the abuse of power in Malaysia is nothing new in fact.
Back in 1998 (close to 20 years now), with Malaysian then under Mahathir's leadership, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the then deputy prime minister was fired from Cabinet. He was then put on trial for corruption and sodomy, and later convicted of both before having the sodomy case overturned in 2004, when Mahathir's successor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was holding the premiership.
While it is easy to look at it now and said, it has been so long, it is simply an evidence of how long abuse of power has taken root in the leadership of the country.
There was also the Perwaja Steel scandal, Port Klang Free Zone scandal...We have the latest 1MDB scandal that put Malaysia on world map with a new term "kleptocracy"...amazingly, no one has been charged with any crime at this point of time.
And in recent times, we heard about the scandal at FGV, the forex losses....but most of the time, nothing happened except to jail the opposition leader that threaten the incumbent.
We also have our former IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar that was promoted to be the chairman of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.
Look nearer to your neighbourhood, and try to see how abuse of power is really, pretty much part of our daily lives, when you see officials in white uniforms, openly asking for "duit kopi".
Abuse of power? Really? Maybe it has become part of our lives that we don't realize it is indeed an outright act of crime and injustice. Maybe somehow, for some reasons, we have accepted this as a norm of life.
