Nadella's first year as Microsoft's CEO

Microsoft of today is not the Microsoft of yesterday. If you haven't notice it, you're not paying attention. The big software company that changed the world under Bill Gates is innovating again.

Nadella is the new man in charge

The 3Es are no longer relevant....embrace, extend, extinguish? Microsoft is moving into a new era, of openness and collaboration. The catalyst to that change: Satya Nadella’s appointment as CEO one year ago. No doubt, not all of the major events occured on his watch began on his watch, Windows 10 has been a work in progress for a while but nevertheless, Nadella is bringing to Microsoft a new culture and a new attitude.

OFFICE for iPAD

When Nadella was appointed as the new CEO for Microsoft, he pledged that Microsoft would become a "mobile first, cloud first" company...and he continued to talk about that....but more importantly, his actions showed he's heading to that direction....the long rumoured Office for iPad is revealed.

While the software was developed under Ballmer's tenure, it was released with a Bang under Nadella. Let's face it. A touch Office working on iPad is pretty cool...and the same goes for those working under Android. It's a move that would be difficult to happen under Ballmer's eyes. And Microsoft made all mobile Office apps completely free to use in basic form.

WINDOWS FOR FREE

It is one thing to develop apps for your competitors and another to give it for free.

At Microsoft’s annual Build developer’s conference in April 2014, it was announced that Microsoft would hand free Windows licenses out for Windows Phones, small tablets, and Internet of Things-style devices.

WINDOWS ON IoT

Windows on Internet of Things. This is Microsoft’s ploy to get ahead of the next billion connected devices after pretty much completely missing the smartphone revolution.

Windows for the Internet of Things (whew, that name!) will be absolutely free when it’s released, and it’s clear it will support both Intel and ARM chips, as it’s been announced for Intel’s Quark-powered Galileo boards and the ARM-powered Raspberry Pi 2 alike.

XBOX Affirmed it's place in Microsoft

While there are a lot of speculation on whether Microsoft will kill off Xbox, Nadella affirms Xbox as one of Microsoft's focus. "The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming,” he wrote. “We are fortunate to have Xbox in our family to go after this opportunity with unique and bold innovation.”

XBOX

One of the biggest ACT is when Microsoft bought Minecraft maker Mojang for $2.5 billion. That move shows Nadella is not just talking about XBox but devotion is there as well.

LARGEST JOB CUT IN MICROSOFT'S HISTORY

Of course, not everything go smoothly under Nadella. In fact, he announced in July 2014, the company's largest job cut ever....18,000 employees were axed, including a full half of the Nokia hires.

largest job cut in Microsoft history

It's definitely not an easy task to make the announcement but he's bold enough to continue doing what he believe is right...something we take note of and highly look up to.

WINDOWS 10 & HOLOLENS

Perhaps Nadella leave the best for the last....and that's got to be Windows 10 event.

Windows 10

Windows 10 is everything that Windows 8 should have been. Microsoft was moving a little bit too quickly in this and that results in a catastrophic user experience. A returned Start menu and windowed Windows apps should make PC users feel more comfortable.

And Microsoft is bringing more to it...

Cortana, Xbox integration that has seen great improvement, universal apps, and even new web browsers, known with the codename Spartan...

And if that's not enough, Nadella take the opportunity to unveil the future: Hololens.
